Transmission: Genital Skin to Skin Contact (vaginal, anal, oral sex, & outercourse)

Can cause Cancer of the cervix, labia, anus, and penis

Test: Pelvic Exam / Pap smear

Treatment: No Cure Warts treated with chemicals freezing burning, or surgical removal

*Treatment will NOT cure the virus*

(HSV2) Herpes Simplex Virus

Viral

Located in genital area and mouth/lips (virus lives in nerves in these areas)

Usually NO Symptoms

Symptoms may include painful blisters/sores on genital area

Transmission: Genital Skin to Skin Contact (vaginal, anal, oral sex, & outercourse)

Infected for life

1,000,000 new cases per year

Test: Pelvic Exam, Culture of blisters or sores, possible blood test

Treatment : Medication may help treat sores and blisters and decrease number of outbreaks

*Treatment will NOT cure the virus*

(HBV) Hepatitis B Virus
(HCV) Hepatitis C Virus

Viral

Located in the blood, saliva, semen, and vaginal fluid

Sometimes NO Symptoms

Symptoms: Jaundice (yellow skin or eyes), fatigue, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite

Transmission: sex (vaginal, anal), I.V. drug use, contact with blood, and from mother to baby during birth



Infected for life and may cause liver failure, liver cancer, and death

HBV – 80,000 new cases per year HCV – 40,000 new cases per year

Test: Blood Test

Treatment: HBV – NO cure, but medications can help control disease HCV – Medications can get rid of this virus

(HIV/AIDS)
Human Immunodeficiency Virus / Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome

Viral

Located in the blood, semen, vaginal fluid, and breast milk

Usually NO symptoms

Symptoms may include fatigue, fever, diarrhea, and other flu-like symptoms

Transmission: sexual activity (vaginal, anal, and oral sex), I.V. drug use, and from mother to baby during pregnancy, birth, or breast feeding

Infected for life, immune system breaks down leading to serious infections or cancers often resulting in death

65,000 new cases per year

Test: blood antibody screening test, DNA test, or viral titer

Treatment: No Cure, medications available to slow progression of disease

Chlamydia
Gonorrhea

Bacterial Infection

Located in the vagina and cervix of women and urine canal in women and men; can be present in the throat (oral sex) or anus (anal sex)

Usually NO symptoms

Symptoms: vaginal discharge, abdominal pain, painful urination, and penile discharge

Transmission: sexual activity (vaginal, anal, and oral sex)

Curable, but if left untreated can cause Pelvic Inflammatory Disease in females leading to infertility, tubal pregnancies, and chronic pelvic pain

Chlamydia – 3 million new cases/year
Gonorrhea – 650,000 new cases/year

Test: DNA test, urine test, or culture test from infected area (cervix, urethra, anus, or throat)

Treatment: Antibiotics by mouth or injections

Syphilis

Bacterial Infection

Located on the mouth or genital area

Symptoms include painless sores on the genital area, mouth, or lips; rash on hands/feet and other areas of the body, paralysis, numbness, blindness, and dementia

Transmission: Skin to Skin Contact (vaginal, anal, and oral sex)



Curable, but if left untreated can spread to the brain, heart, spinal cord, eyes and other areas causing damage; can cause brain damage and abnormalities in childbirth

70,000 new cases per year

Test: blood test or examination of sores

Treatment: Antibiotics by injection

Trichomoniasis

Protozoa

Located in the vagina in women and urethra in men and women

Usually NO symptoms

Symptoms: women have frothy, yellow/green vaginal discharge with a strong odor

Transmission: sexual activity (vaginal and anal sex)

Curable, but if left untreated increased risk for acquiring HIV and may cause premature delivery in pregnant women

Test: pelvic exam and laboratory tests on the vaginal or urethral fluid

Treatment: Antibiotics by mouth
